A Korean man identified as Kim Woo-sung has been arrested by U.S. federal authorities at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas after approximately 400 grams of cocaine were discovered concealed in his luggage.
A subsequent physical search by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers revealed the cocaine, with an estimated street value of over $40,000, expertly hidden within a false compartment in the lining of his suitcase.
Kim Woo-sung had been in the United States for a short stay, reportedly for tourism purposes in the Las Vegas area. Authorities state he was moments away from departing when he was intercepted.
Thanks to the vigilance of our CBP officers, a significant quantity of a dangerous drug was prevented from reaching international borders," a DEA spokesperson said. "This interception underscores our commitment to combating the transnational drug trade."
Kim now faces serious federal charges of narcotics possession with intent to distribute. If convicted, he could face a minimum of 10 years to life in federal prison.
The Korean Consulate in Los Angeles has been notified of the arrest and is providing limited consular assistance. Officials from the consulate stated they are in contact with Kim and local authorities to ensure his legal rights are protected under U.S. law.
The case has been handed over to the DEA for further investigation, as authorities work to determine if Kim was acting alone or as part of a larger drug trafficking syndicate.
